Context
The City of Brussels launched an initiative in 2019 to facilitate the establishment of "school streets". The school street is an intervention in public space near a school, aiming to facilitate and secure access for students, staff and visitors. In this case, short-term actions are linked to the long-term objectives of the City's majority agreement: improving the air quality around schools, increasing road safety, discouraging unnecessary car traffic, greening the public space and encourage modal transfer for all journeys between schools and the city.
Mission
The mission consists in supporting the City of Brussels in the communication, awareness, and coordination of the construction of School streets on the territory of the City.
Approach
Our approach consists first of all in objectifying the context specific to each selected school via identification sheets: stakeholders, spatial organization and mobility data. The study is still in progress, and will continue to initiate a dialogue with each school pole, in order to identify the possibilities of action, in the short, medium or long term. We consider this reflection on School streets and their implementation as part of a broader reflection on the transformation of public spaces in Brussels.
